Starting from Necessity

In the spring of 2019 Aïdah’s uncle unexpectedly died in his sleep. In a hurry, she had to plan his janazah (a Muslim funeral prayer) with no guidebook and little direction on what to do. Using her personal experience and gathering the financial resources within her community, she was able to organize and fully fund the funeral service to lay her uncle to rest. Barely two months later one of her aunties (a close family friend and mentor) died followed by her beloved paternal grandmother.

These deaths spurred Aïdah to begin a journey to create an organized resource for people like her to not only navigate the logistics of planning the death of loved ones, but find solace in the process. This journey has included deep listening to stories about death from family, friends, and community members. These stories affirmed her intention to create Visitor.

Visitor is a death preparedness resource website for Muslims living in the U.S. and their loved ones. Our intention is to be of service for those who are preparing to bury a loved one or preparing for their own death.
